Street photography is about capturing candid moments of everyday life in public spaces, and is both challenging and rewarding. And when it comes to gear, I found that mirrorless cameras are perfect for street photography. They are lightweight, compact, and easy to carry around, making them less obtrusive, and easy to have on hand for that perfect shot.
When it comes to lenses, I highly recommend a prime lens with a wide aperture (f/1.8 or lower) for street photography. These lenses allow for a shallow depth of field, which can help to separate the subject from the background, creating a sense of depth and dimension in your photos. A 35mm or 50mm lens is my personal go-to, as it gives a natural perspective, similar to the human eye.
One of the most important things to keep in mind when street photography is to move quickly and discreetly. I always make sure to set my camera to a silent mode, this way it won't make noise when I take a picture, reducing the chances of attracting unwanted attention from my subjects.
In terms of technique, patience is key. Street photography is all about capturing moments, so it's important to be aware of what's happening around you and to be ready to take a picture at a moment's notice. And always be respectful of your subjects, only take pictures of people who are willing to be photographed.
In addition to my camera and lens, I always carry a comfortable bag to carry my gear, extra batteries, an external viewfinder and a small tripod or Gorillapod. My personal tip, if you're just starting out with street photography, try to find a local photography group or club, it's a great way to learn new techniques, get feedback on your work, and meet other like-minded people.
Overall, street photography with a mirrorless camera is a wonderful way to capture candid moments of everyday life. With the right gear and techniques, you can create stunning and evocative images that capture the essence of the streets. Remember, be patient, be respectful, and always be ready to take that shot when the moment arises. Happy shooting!
